Economic research on agricultural cooperatives has been developed in North American and European Countries since 1940s. This paper reviews and assesses theoretically-oriented economic literature on agricultural cooperatives that has appeared in academic journals of English language for the last seven decades. It is identified that the focus on economic research for agricultural cooperatives has been moved from industrial organization-based market behavior investigations to contract theory- and game theory-based organizational underpinnings. The paper also discusses the implications for future research on Korean agricultural cooperatives.
