Referring to recent debates on the persistence of family farming in western societies, this paper puts forward a four-fold typology of family farms. based on the two factors of property ownership and the absence or presence of full-time non-family employment within the farm business. From interviews with farmers in the Northern Uplands Objective 5b area of the UK, it reveals that not only does each of the four family farm models have its own intrinsic characteristics regarding farm management and survival strategies, but they play complementary roles in maintaining farming and non-farming businesses and environmental conservation in the local area. This indicates the need for rural development policy to provide distinct types of farm with different forms of assistance and to improve the implementation system to ensure the broader participation of the farming community in local development processes.
